Great Camanoe is a private, completely residential island that has no shops, restaurants or business, just lots of peace and tranquility. After many years of serving as a site for sugar, cotton, and indigo plantations in the 1800's, the island was uninhabited until about fifty years ago when two small communities of residential, mostly vacation, homes were begun. Some interesting ruins and gravesites still remain from the past.
To get a true sense of what it's like to live on Privateer's Estate, Great Camanoe, have a read of some of the fascinating, illuminating and sometimes downright funny stories of some of the families that have owned homes on the island for decades. We certainly had a blast getting to know the homeowners as they shared their wonderful stories. Enjoy!
